Safety protocol

How Denori responds when someone is struggling.

What happens on every Denori machine when a person writes about suicide or self-harm, and the one number we count for reports the law requires.

Last updated 11 October 2026

If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, you don't have to go through it alone. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Elsewhere, find a free, confidential line at findahelpline.com. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.

01Denori is an AI

Denori is an AI assistant, not a person, and it can make mistakes. It may not be suitable for some minors. The app says so in every chat.

02What happens when someone writes about suicide or self-harm

  • Every Denori machine checks the person's own messages for expressions of suicidal thoughts or self-harm. The check runs on the machine itself: conversations never leave it, and Denori never sees them.
  • When the check fires, the chat shows crisis resources for the machine's country, such as 988 in the United States.
  • The AI is instructed to respond with care, to encourage reaching out to someone the person trusts or to a crisis line, and never to describe methods or encourage self-harm, including when asked to frame it as fiction or research.
  • Every reply, flagged or not, is made under the same instruction never to give methods or encouragement.

03What is counted, and why

Some laws require us to report how many times crisis resources were shown. Each machine keeps a single number per year: how many times it showed them. It sends only that number to us. We add it to a total for the machine's state or region as it arrives and do not keep a count for any machine, household or person. No names, accounts, messages or times are ever sent. The totals are used only for legally required reports.

04Limits

The check looks for clear expressions in English and can miss things or flag ordinary messages. It is a safety net, not a diagnosis, and Denori is not a substitute for professional help or emergency services.
